Evidence for a Recent Dike Injection in Northern California Using Gravity and Seismicity A Senior Thesis in Geosciences

چکیده
In the year 2000, an anomalous sequence of off-fault seismicity was detected near Lake Pillsbury in northern California. The seismicity was interpreted by Hayes et al. (2005, 2006) to be associated with a dike injection. I completed a gravity survey over the location of the seismicity and used that data in gravity modeling, to test the hypothesis that the seismicity was directly linked to the intrusion of a dike. A symmetrical, negative gravity anomaly of maximum amplitude 3 mGal and approximate width 5 km was detected directly above the location of the seismicity. The results of the gravity modeling suggest that the negative anomaly is generated by two zones where density has been reduced, as a result of rock fracturing open in response to the intrusion of the dike. The two fractured regions used in the gravity models are consistent with seismicity patterns and coulomb stress models and therefore provide additional support for the dike injection hypothesis.

The Sungun copper porphyry deposit is hosted by a Tertiary magmatic complex in the Azarbayjan province , northwestern Iran. The Sungan mine in its southern and eastern parts is limited by early Miocene volcanic and by Late Cretaceous limestone rocks in northern and eastern parts respectively . The Sungun deposit is associated with a suite of porphyritic granitoids and late dikes intrudi...
متن کاملA comparison of seismicity rates and fluid-injection operations in Oklahoma and California: Implications for crustal stresses
Fluid injection into deep wellbores can increase pore pressure, reduce effective stress, and trigger earthquakes. The extent of the seismogenic response to injection provides insight into how close faults are to failure in the injection-affected area. The seismogenic response to injection operations in hydrocarbon basins is examined in California and Oklahoma. Changes in spatial and temporal se...
متن کاملEstimation of the relative active tectonics in Shahriary basin (Central Iran) using geomorphic and seismicity indices
Iran is well known for having countless historical and instrumental records of tectonic events. Shahriary catchment, as a study area, is part of the Zagros collision seismic province. This research aimed to introduce a new method which is useful in identifying the relative active tectonic events of an area. The research method was designed in order to calculate the relative active tectonic inde...

As a result of recent developments, global economic centre of gravity has slide to Asia-Pacific region. It is predicted that Asia-Pacific countries will take place at the first row in global trade and nearly a half of the total trade will intensify in this region at the year 2030. On the other hand, the region covers countries from different levels of development. These features of the region p...
متن کاملNew Improvement in Interpretation of Gravity Gradient Tensor Data Using Eigenvalues and Invariants: An Application to Blatchford Lake, Northern Canada
Recently, interpretation of causative sources using components of the gravity gradient tensor (GGT) has had a rapid progress. Assuming N as the structural index, components of the gravity vector and gravity gradient tensor have a homogeneity degree of -N and - (N+1), respectively. In this paper, it is shown that the eigenvalues, the first and the second rotational invariants of the GGT (I1 and ...
